Why a Sewer Contractor Is Called Darr's Cleaning
People find this company looking for office cleaning, carpets or a janitorial service, and none of that is what we do. The name dates from 1960 and it is telling the truth about then rather than about now.
Where the Name Came From
Harold E. Darr began cleaning furnaces around Clyde in 1960. The business was called what it did, which at the time was cleaning, and the word went on the trucks.
Then he printed a notice advertising a sideline: in addition to furnace cleaning, now I am also cleaning septic tanks. The sideline became the company. The word on the trucks did not change, and by the time anyone might have reconsidered it, several decades of customers in northwest Ohio knew the name.
The full story, including the family photographs, is on the About page. This article is about the practical problem the name creates.
What Darr's Actually Does
Liquid waste and sewer infrastructure. Nothing that happens inside a building above the drain.
- Septic systems. Tank pumping, locating and camera inspection.
- Sewer and drain lines. High-pressure jetting, root control, and blocked lines at any hour.
- Collection systems and plants. Sanitary and storm mains, wet wells and lift stations, treatment plants and catch basins.
- Hydrovac excavation. Water and vacuum to open ground around buried utilities without cutting into them.
What Darr's Does Not Do
It is quicker to say it plainly than to let somebody work it out from a service list.
- Office, building or janitorial cleaning
- Carpets, windows, or anything inside a property
- Power washing and exterior cleaning
- Duct or furnace cleaning, which is where the name came from but is not work we do now
If that is what you are looking for, you want a different company, and we would rather tell you that in the first ten seconds of a phone call than halfway through it.
Why the Name Stayed
Changing it would have meant giving up the thing a family business spends decades building. In a trade where most work arrives by recommendation, the name on the truck is the recommendation. People in Sandusky County have been calling that number since before it had an area code.
So the name stays, and the explaining gets done here instead. If you found this page because you were not sure what kind of company this is, that is exactly why it exists.
The Short Version
Darr's Cleaning, Inc. is a liquid waste and sewer infrastructure contractor in Clyde, Ohio, family owned and operating since 1960, working across 23 counties in northwest and west central Ohio, open 24 hours a day. If it is buried, backed up, or has to be pumped out, it is our work. If it involves a mop, it is not.
